EACOM Timber is wasting no time getting ready to reopen the Ear Falls sawmill.
The mill has been closed since 2009 and EACOM bought it from Domtar in 2010.
Senior Vice President of Forestry Brian Nicks says they have a mill manager in place and are now securing forestry staff and contractors.
Nicks says they will be building a log inventory in early 2014 and hope to reopen the mill next Spring.
Up to 125-workers will be staffed at the sawmill once its running on two shifts, and roughly 175 will be staffed in woodlands operations.
Nicks notes this is the right time to make the move as the U.S. housing market is showing encouraging trends for the next 5-years.
He says there’s a 50-year record low supply of new homes available in the U.S. and mortgage rates are still low.
Nicks adds the facility is in pretty good shape as the heat has been on for the past 4-years.
He notes there will be a few million dollars in equipment and capital upgrades and they are planning some more work in the near future.
