Eacom Predicting Strong 2018 For Lumber Industry

The forest industry in northwestern Ontario could enjoy another successful year.

That’s according to the Director of Public Affairs for Eacom, which operates a sawmill in Ear Falls.

Christine Leduc says mother nature has been pushing up the need for lumber products.

Leduc says a number of B.C. lumber mills had to close down in 2017 due to wild fires, which pushed up demand for lumber from other provinces, like Ontario.

She notes a construction boom is also being forecast in the U.S. following the devastating hurricanes in Texas and Florida, boosting lumber prices.

Leduc adds that softwood lumber duties from the United States haven’t been nearly as bad as feared and higher prices for their products are helping to offset the added tariffs.
