The Superior International Junior Hockey League has approved a franchise for Ear Falls-Red Lake.
The team will be known as the Eagles and will begin play at the Ear Falls Arena this upcoming season.
The team colours will be black, white, gold and orange.
Kevin Kahoot has been named head coach and general manager and says it’s an exciting time for the area.
Kahoot notes they will incorporate the team as a regional team.
Kahoot, who is also the Mayor of Ear Falls, had a brief stint of coaching with the Thunder Bay North Stars last year.
However, he has extensive experience as the former coach of the Red Lake Rams High School hockey team and other junior ‘A’ levels.
He stresses the first order of business is getting hockey operations going and notes the business side is starting to get going.
The organization’s executive is expected to be finalized in the coming days.
A season ticket drive is set to commence in June.
SIJHL President Ron Whitehead says he’s pleased with the new addition and notes it creates an instant rivalry with the Dryden Ice Dogs.
Meantime, the SIJHL champion Minnesota Wilderness begin their quest for a Canadian Junior Hockey championship tomorrow.
The Wilderness face the host Summerside Western Capitals.
