The flu bug has hit our area early.
The Northwestern Health Unit has confirmed the first case of Influenza.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young-Hoon says cases this early in the season are rare, so it’s extra important right now to get your flu shot.
The shots are free and most pharmacies can give the vaccine to anyone over the age of 5, with no appointment needed.
Young-Hoon says anyone can get the shot at any Health Unit office or at their Primary Care provider.

Young-Hoon warns having one positive case means that there are other, non-lab tested cases in the region.
She stresses getting the vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu.
Young-Hoon also recommends coughing and sneezing into your sleeve and washing your hands often.
If you do get sick, stay away from school or work and avoid public places until you’re feeling better.
You should also not visit friends or family in hospitals and long-term care homes.
If you need medical care for a flu or cold virus, you can call Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000.
