The future of the Thunder Bay generating station remains in limbo, with one city councillor assuring us they haven’t given up.
Larry Hebert admits for now, they’re gathering information on ways to keep the plant as an Ontario Power Generation facility, as well as other options.
“We’re not really that active in going after other groups, in terms of their interest, or what OPG might do for us.”
While Hebert hasn’t heard of any meetings with Energy Minister and Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford, he adds the local power worker’s union has been trying to contact him for assistance.
“I have talked to power union rep, Gene Capasso, and they’re trying to get Rickford for themselves.”
Hebert adds once information gathering is done, they hope to attract groups that will join them.
“A committee we’re trying to form, to keep it going, hopefully as an OPG plant, but some other options as well that we have to determine.”
The station is considered as critical to ensure our region has enough power to deal with planned future growth.
