Some progress has been made regarding the future of the Experimental Lakes Area, west of Vermilion Bay.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Winnipeg-based International Institute for Sustainable Development have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
It will focus on remedial activities such as clean up costs and the necessary moves to get the facility back up and running.
Kenora MP Greg Rickford says the province continues to be heavily involved in discussions with the IISD.
He notes that they are hoping to have things moving by this summer since the tenancy is set to expire by then.
After this lengthy process, Rickford says he thanks everyone who provided input, feedback and pushed the government to keep the research facility open.
Rickford adds the provincial government will continue talks with the ISSD.
