Election Rundown

Plenty of surprises and a few upsets highlighted Monday’s
Municipal Election.
There were plenty of changes, so here’s a look at the results
from across the Region.
The City of Dryden has a new Council.
Voters elected Gwen Keefe, Brian Collins, Mike Wood, Dennis Wintle,
Gary Case and Mel Fisher to Council.
Mayor Anne Krassilowsky was acclaimed and says she looks forward to
working with the new Council.
Dryden residents also decided to put fluoride back in the drinking
water by voting 56% in favour of the move in a plebisite.
Voter turnout in Dryden was 41%.
Kathy Poling is the new Mayor of Sioux Lookout.
Poling beat Dennis Leney.
Mayor Kathy Kiepick opted not to run.
For Council at Large, Ben Hancharuk, Joyce Timpson, James Brohm and
David Gordon were elected.
Ward 1 and 2 positions will be filled by Donald Fenelon and Susan
Williams.
The Mayors seat in Ignace will be filled by Lionel Cloutier.
617 votes was enough for Cloutier to get past Suzanne Smith and
Chicki Pesola.
Kimberley Crossley, Dianne Loubier, Sherrill Musclow and John Taddeo
were elected to Council.
Incumbents Erik Thingstad, Rudy Hulina and Dennis Smyk were not
re-elected.
The race for Mayor in Ear Falls went down to the bitter end and when
the dust cleared Ron Bergman emerged the winner.
Bergman upended incumbent Jim Desmarais by 20 votes with Tracy
Chapman not far behind.
Bergman says he put a lot of time and effort into the campaign.
Kim Thain, Robert Doyle, Stan Leschuk and David Wilson were elected to Council.
Phil Vinet will replace outgoing Mayor Dunc Wilson in Red Lake.
In what was a tight race from the start, Vinet fended off Jack
Goodwillie by 104 votes.
Vinet says he knew it would be a struggle from the start.
Elected to Council were Anne Billard, Ken Forsythe, Donna Malloy, Brian
Larson, Paul Parsons and Debra Shusack.
Carol Baron and Floyd Drager were not re-elected.
The Township of Machin has a new Mayor as Garry Parkes held of
Incumbent Barbara Beernaerts by about 90-votes.
Parkes says he’s ready to represent the constituents.
Stannis Montgomery, Laurie Huffman, Linda Anderson and Paul Kelly
will make up Council.
Larry Olsen and William Wiedenhoeft were not re-elected.
Voter turnout in Machin was 32%.
Dennis Brown has been re-elected to serve a fourth consecutive term
as Mayor of Atikokan.
Brown defeated Robert Davidson by roughly 800-votes and
says he’s pleased with the public’s response.
William Bell, Mike Shusterman, Bud Dickson, Sherwin Durand, Charlie
Viddal and Marj Lampkin received a spot on Council.
Incumbents Mary Makarenko and Marlene Davidson were not re-elected.
There will be 4 new faces on Council and a brand new Mayor in Kenora.
Len Compton ousted Dave Canfield, picking up just over 2,600 votes, 500
more than Canfield.
Randy Nickle finished third collecting just 150 votes less than Canfield.
For Council, Incumbents Rory McMillan will be joined by Andrew Poirer as well as newcomers
Dave McCann, Wendy Cuthbert, Charito Drinkwalter and Chris Van Wallenghem.
Fort Frances also posted an upset result as Buisinessman Roy Avis knocked off incumbent Dan Onichuk for the Mayor’s seat.
