A new report conducted for the Ministry of Natural Resources suggests the elk population in Northwestern Ontario may have dropped by about 50 percent.
About 110 Elk were released in the Cameron Lake area southeast of Sioux Narrows nine years ago, but their numbers are down to about 60 or 70.
Rick Rosatti is the co-author of the report and says unfortunately they don’t have an accurate count of the animals.
N018 Q: …as fast. (22 secs.)
Rosatti says harsh winters, wolf predation and hunters accidentally shooting elk have affected the numbers in northwestern Ontario.
On the other hand, he says the herd introduced in northeastern Ontario seems to be doing quite well.
