Elk numbers down in NWO

A new study shows that elk introduced in northwestern Ontario aren’t doing as well as their counterparts brought to northeastern Ontario.

About 110 elk were imported from Alberta almost 10 years ago, but only about half that number are still surviving.

Rick Rosatti is co-author of the report for the Ministry of Natural Resources and says its still possible for the population to grow in the Lake of the Woods Area.

N017 Q: …limit growth. (15 secs.)

Rosatti suggests wolves, hunters and harsh winters have all harmed the elk population in northwestern Ontario.

On the other hand, the elk introduced in the Bancroft and Nipissing areas seem to be flourishing.
