Under proposed provincial legislation, municipalities would have a year to set plans to handle such emergencies as floods and terrorist attacks.
The bill would also require towns and cities to hold training exercises in disaster response.
A number of municipalities in Northwestern Ontario already have emergency-management plans in place including Dryden, Atikokan, and Kenora.
Atikokan Mayor Dennis Brown says they have had such a plan in place for a number of years, and this past summer the hospital conducted a mock-disaster scenerio.
However, there is no word on what exactly falls under the proposed legislation.
