The Chair of the Environment Committee of Sioux Lookout says the community prides itself in having a pristine environment and the passing of a by-law to ban the use of plastic bags is another step in ensuring this status continues.
Anne Saltel says she’s thrilled with Council’s decision, given the amount of work committed by volunteers.
She understands that it is a polarized issue but believes the Municipality will benefit in the long-run.
Saltel adds its her hope that other communities follow suit and that the Province may even jump on board.
She notes the bylaw does address some concerns for retailers regarding minnows, vegetables and hardware.
