An alternative to candy this Halloween.
Richard Boon of the Northwestern Ontario chapter of the Canadian Diabetes Association says there are other things parents can do for their child who has diabetes.
It includes:
– emphasizing the fun aspect of Halloween, such as decorating and preparing a costume
– considering other tasty treats that don’t involve candy
– sorting through the candy together and ration them out over time
– trade candy for another perk, such as a new toy or a movie
– have one of their least favourite candies in their school bag to treat hypoglycemia
– consider handing out other Halloween treats, such as themed school supplies
In Northwestern Ontario, about 26,000 people have diabetes and more then 50,000 are at risk.
