False Facebook Post Causes Problems for OPP

It may have been someone’s idea of a joke, but the OPP aren’t laughing.

No one is sure just who first posted an out of date link from a Kenora-based website on Facebook yesterday (Sunday) The link said Highway 17 West of Dryden was closed at the intersection of Glengoland Road due to a fatal motor vehicle accident. In fact, the incident occured many months ago, and the link was out of date.

Social media jumped on the ‘news’ story, with numerous re-posts. Within two hours, a Thunder Bay News site (Net News Ledger) even re-wrote the bogus post as news.

As a result, the OPP Communications Centre was flooded with calls from the public.

CKDR spoke directly with OPP, confirming the ‘closure’ was a hoax.
