Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada is making a major investment to improve health and safety for on-reserve residents.
The government is spending $28.5-million for the design and upgrades to diesel generating stations and fuel tank systems at 19 remote Ontario First Nations.
The announcement was made Tuesday in Kasabonika Lake by Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford.
The money will help off-set costs of completed and on-going projects but nine reserves will see new work carried out.
Rickford says sustainable and reliable electrical generation and fuel facilities are crucial to the future of economic growth and development opportunities in the far north.
Communities impacted include Deer Lake, Fort Severn, Poplar Hill, New Osnaburgh, North Spirit Lake, Attawapiskat, Kashechewan, Fort Albany, Sandy Lake, Weenusk, Eabameetoong, Big Trout Lake, Wikwemikong, Pikangikum, Kasabonika, Muskrat Dam, Mattagami, Webequie and Sachigo Lake.
