Federal Funding For Jobs Symposium

Aboriginal youth in the Kenora District are getting a chance to learn more about future job opportunities in Northwestern Ontario.
The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board has received $46,000 from the Federal Government to host a
an Aboriginal Trades and Employment Symposium.
Kenora MP Greg Rickford made the announcement in Sioux Lookout on Monday.
Rickford says the money will help youth succeed.
He wants to ensure that aboriginal youth have the opportunity to be competitive in an exciting job market.
SLAM Office Manager Mary Tait says First Nations youth will learn about employment opportunities in mining, trades, forestry and apprenticeship.
Tait says those in attendance will find out what it takes to enter these budding industries and why grade 12 math and english are essential.
Tait notes officials from various mining companies, trades unions, training institutions and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University’s will be invited.
Tait adds they are targeting 65 First Nations communities.
The symposium is scheduled for mid-September in Dryden and Thunder Bay.
