It was a day of celebration in Sioux Lookout.
The community and government reps gathered yesterday for the grand opening of the spacious and new Centennial Centre.
The Centre replaces the old Sioux Hotel.
The building features retail and office space and is also home to the new Youth Centre, Anti-Racism Committee and Blueberry Festival.
Mayor Dennis Leney took time to thank both levels of Government and their $3.6-million contribution.
Leney notes the Municipality added $1-million and notes that money will be repaid over 25-years from revenues generated from the building.
He also thanked the financial and in-kind contributions from Harvey Friesen, Marc Gaudet, the Salvation Army and the Anti-Racism Committee.
Everyone in attendance noted that the Centre will help develop youth, arts and culture in the community.
The Centre is state-of-the-art and overlooks the train station and Pelican Lake.
Terry Lynne Jewell is with the Anti-Racism Committee and she says they are proud to be a part of the building.
The town now operates the Youth Centre but the Committee remains actively involved with programming.
Jewell says this Fall they will offer a healthy living initiative with area youth.
Jewell adds the Centre will be doing some work in the schools this Fall to welcome new students to the area.
