A new Tackling Contraband Tobacco Act introduced by the federal government is aimed partly at preventing young people from taking up smoking.
Federal Justice Minister Peter Mackay says this will give more power to law enforcement agencies to target those involved in producing, distributing and trafficking illegal cigarettes.
He says the government felt it needed to act in an effort to protect communities and young people.
Mackay adds illegal tobacco is often linked to other organized crime.
