A Northern Ontario MP has issued a plea for help for financial
assistance for Nipigon following this week’s mill fire.
Sault Ste. Marie NDP representative Tony Martin met with FedNor
Minister Tony Clement Wednesday stating the blaze is an economic
catastrophe.
Martin and area New Democrats have scheduled an emergency visit to
Nipigon to view the damage, while Clement has advised the community to
submit a request for disaster relief.
Meantime, a trust fund for donations has been opened to help the 120 workers who
lost their jobs in the fire.
Plant managers also say they intend to rebuild the 50-year-old
plywood plant.
They are meeting with the insurance company and the Ontario
government but caution it could take a year or more to get it built.
