Whether it’s more of a symbolic gesture or not remains to be seen.
The Harper Government has introduced a bill to increase the penalties for impaired driving but time has run out this session to actually pass the legislation.
Sue Dale of Families for Justice, representing those who have lost loved ones to drunk drivers, says they played a part in what’s being proposed.
Dale says they held meetings with the government and submitted information to MP’s.
She’s hoping whichever party forms the next government will proceed with the bill.
The proposed legislation increases the maximum penalties with mandatory minimum prison time of six years for anyone convicted of impaired driving causing death.
