Feds Sign New Framework Agreement With Metis

The Trudeau government and the Metis Nation of Ontario have signed a Framework Agreement to advance reconciliation with the Northwestern Ontario Metis community.

The partnership will begin the conversation in an effort to address the unique history and outstanding claims of the Metis living in our area.

Kenora MP Bob Nault says these negotiations will take time but they must take place to determine solutions that will enhance the well-being of the Metis people.

Nault stresses the start of these talks is long overdue.

Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett says the Metis community has struggled to have their unique history and outstanding collective claims recognized by Canada.

Bennett admits there’s a lot more work to be done, but stresses their agreement sets a way forward to finally address and resolve outstanding promises and challenges.
