Feds Supporting Innovation In Forest Industry

The federal government is committing big bucks to help diversify the forest industry in northwestern Ontario.

$5.8-million is being contributed to help build a demonstration plant in Thunder Bay to transform wood components into bio-chemicals and alternate fuel sources.

It’s a joint partnership with FPInnovations and Resolute Forest Products.

Resolute spokesperson Remi Lalonde says he’s looking forward to how the on-site facility will transform the trees they harvest.

The plant is expected to be up and running in about a year, adding new jobs as the need arises along the way.

In spite of the challenges Resolute has faced, Lalonde says he’s looking forward to the growth opportunities this pilot project could bring.
