Feds Supporting Mercury Treatment Centre In Grassy Narrows

Canada’s Indigenous Services Minister says she is working with the Grassy Narrows First Nation on the development of a mercury treatment centre in their community.

Jane Philpott says she met with the Chiefs of both Grassy Narrows and White Dog in Toronto last week and confirms their is a funding commitment for the facility.

There have been reports that the treatment centre could cost as much as $4.5-million, but Philpott says discussions are still in the very early stages.

Philpott says the exact design and cost of the centre still have to be worked out, but she’s hoping to see both in-patient and out-patient services available.

She stresses the federal government has a responsibility to support health care initiatives in Indigenous communities.
