Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Indigenous people will no longer have to prove their rights and fight for them.
He’s announced plans for a new Recognition and Implementation of Rights Framework.
He says it can’t be done without changes to existing rules.
Trudeau says policies governing land claims and self-government will be replaced with better approaches that respect First Nations.
The government wants to have the legislation approved and in place by October 2019.
Trudeau says they’ll work in partnership with First Nations, Inuit and Metis groups in developing the partnership.
