Testimony in the inquest looking into the death of Gloria Assin has wrapped up at the Kenora Court House.
The final piece of testimony came from Assin’s family, as they provided a written statement about the 42-year-old Grassy Narrows resident.
Assin was a former kindergarten teacher in Grassy Narrows, but left the community after her relationship became abusive.
Assin also had four children, and the family says she began to drink after two of her kids were taken away by Children’s Aid.
Following the testimony, each of the lawyers presented a list of possible recommendations for the jury to consider.
The included the use of automatic seat belts in police cruisers, and increased collaboration between social service agencies and the police.
In his final charge to the jury, Dr. Michael Wilson he says “we speak for the dead, to protect the living”.
The jury is now deliberating and is expected to come back with their findings before the end of Friday.
