First Nation man fined for building cabin

A Couchiching First Nation man has been fined 3-thousand dollars for building a cabin illegally near Trout Lake, north of Fort Frances.

The Ministry of Natural Resources notes 47-year-old Leslie Baker had claimed hunting and fishing treaty rights allowed him to build a cabin in 2001.

But in court recently, Baker was fined for failing to get a work permit and for building the cabin after the MNR issued a stop work order.

A justice of the peace determined Baker does not have any right to build near Trout Lake and he has been ordered to remove the cabin from public land.
