First Nations High School Hoping For Results From Inquiry

A First Nations high school in Thunder Bay says an inquest into the deaths of six of its former students will hopefully improve the aboriginal education system.

The inquest is entering it’s second day Tuesday.

Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School says, in particular, more funding is needed to make aboriginal schools comparable to public schools.

Principal Jonathan Kakegamic says they also need additional dollars for after-hours care, noting it’s important to engage youth every day.

Kakegamic says they currently get $6,500 per student to look after them after school, but stresses that’s not enough.

He is currently seeking to double the amount of federal dollars the school gets now.

Students come from remote northern First Nations and are under the school’s care, 24 hours a day, from August until May.
