First Nations officials are disappointed that Thunder Bay City Council isn’t asking a Conservative Sentator to step down.
On Monday, a motion to call for Lynn Beyak’s resignation failed because of a tie.
The vote came after Beyak’s comments on Indigenous people and the Residential School System, which Alvin Fiddler calls insulting and racist.
The Grand Chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation says the decision is “extremely disappointing.”
According to Fiddler, the city missed a major opportunity to stand with Indigenous people.
He says not asking for Beyak to step down goes against the spirit of a recent commitment between the City, Fort William First Nation, and Nishnawbe Aski Nation.
In a joint statement with Nishnawbe Aski Nation, the Chief of Fort William First Nation says that decision is a setback in the development of a good relationship between their communities.
Peter Collins says the six Council members who voted against the motion showed a lack of knowledge and understanding, which he calls a barrier to reconciliation. (File Photos)
