First Nations School Burns To Ground In Suspicious Fire

The remote northern community of Wapekeka First Nation is now without an elementary school after a suspicious fire.

Provincial Police says officers responded to a fire call at the Reverend Eleazar Winter Memorial School late Wednesday night.

Officers and community members weren’t able to extinguish the blaze, and the school completely burned down.

Damage is estimated at over $5-million.

OPP in Sioux Lookout are involved in the investigation and police are hoping someone comes forward with information on may have started the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

The 350-member First Nation is located about 600-kilometres north of Thunder Bay.
