Forest Fire Season Underway

It might not look like it, but the forest fire season in northwestern Ontario is officially underway.

April 1st marks the traditional start to the fire season.

Jonathan Scott is an Information Officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and as expected he says things have been pretty quiet so far.

Scott notes conditions can change quickly and it’s important for local residents to be aware of changing weather patterns.

Scott says they are still busy getting ready for the season and have started hiring their crew personnel.

He says that will continue until early May.

Scott says some training is underway.

A reminder that daytime burning is not allowed during fire season.

Scott says if you are burning brush, you have to ignite it no sooner than two hours before sunset, and extinguish it no later than two hours after sunrise.

He notes all fires must be monitored at all times.
