OPSEU Concerned With Winter Road Maintenance

Questions are once again being raised about winter road maintenance in northwestern Ontario.

Derrick Lamarche is a local Ontario Public Services Employees Union spokesperson and says the financial troubles for Carillion should be ringing alarm bells for the provincial government.

Lamarche says highway maintenance in the Thunder Bay district has been impacted, as employees aren’t going to work over concerns they won’t get paid.

Lamarche says he continues to see deplorable conditions first hand.

He calls the roads horrible, icy and dangerous.

Lamarche says on one of his travels on Highway 105 this Winter, a plow truck was even in the ditch, along with another three to four vehicles.

Lamarche is urging the Liberals to put highway snow clearing back in public hands.

Meantime, Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell is joining the calls for change.

Campbell says her office has been inundated every single year with horror stories on northern highways.
