Forest Fire Update For Northwestern Ontario

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says a return of warm and sunny weather is expected to increase the fire hazard across northwestern Ontario.

The hazard remains high to extreme in the north and south portions of the region, with the central area experiencing low to moderate conditions.

There were two new fires reported Sunday, one a small blaze being held in the Red Lake district and another already declared out in the Kenora district.

There are 19-active blazes burning right now, only two that aren’t under control.

Officials are also keeping their eye on two fires of concern.

Red Lake #38 is now listed at nearly 15,000 hectares and continues to burn 8-kilometres southeast of North Spirit Lake First Nation.

The blaze has become a little more volatile due to two days of unsettled weather.

However, the fire is not threatening the far north community at this time.

The other blaze is 132-hectares and is 20-kilometres southwest of Weagamow First Nation.

The fire isn’t under control but crews continue to contain its spread to the north.
