A learning session for area teachers on best forestry practices in northwestern Ontario.
24-instructors recently took part in a two day professional development session in Kenora, hosted by the Canadian Institute of Forestry.
The classroom and field sessions focused on forest management planning, the science of forestry, legislation, as well as forest certification and operations.
Teachers toured the Weyerhaeuser mill and had a hands-on experience on harvest operations.
The CIF says the goal was to clear misconceptions about forestry and help teachers learn more about sustainable forestry practices.
After the learning experience, the organization provided instructors with classroom ready kits, activities and other materials to promote the forest sector to their students.
The initiative started last year in Dryden and the plan is rotate between the two communities on a yearly basis.
It’s a joint effort delivered by the Domtar, Weyerhaeuser, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, FPInnovations, Miisun Integrated Resource Management and Devlin Timber.
The session focuses on teachers employed by the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board and the Kenora Catholic District School Board.
