A former Dryden resident has made it her quest to make sure homeless people in Winnipeg have something for Christmas.
Ashley Meilleur says it all started when she gave a homeless woman her lunch, but inside the bag was her $700 cell phone.
Shorly after, she recieved a call from her mother who said that a panhandler had called her, saying that she had the cell phone.
Overjoyed, Meilleur met up with the woman, named Jen, and the phone was returned with no problems.
Meiller gave Jen the $15 dollars she had in her wallet, and spent the next couple hours talking with Jen about how she ended up on the streets.
Meiller says Jen has changed her perspective, and is the reason she has started “The Lending Hand”.
She is accepting donations of money, warm clothes, gift cards and anything that would help the homeless people of Winnipeg.
On Christmas morning, Meiller will be driving around the city dropping off the gifts.
So far, “The Lending Hand” has raised roughly $550 and the donations continue to come in.
Meiller says the root of her new program is Jen, and says that she even purchased her a cell phone with a 2-year plan, so that they can stay in contact.
Meiller adds that she hopes to help turn Jen’s life around.
