Fort William Chief Wants Action On James Street Bridge

Fort William First Nation Chief Peter Collins wants the Provincial and Federal Governments to take action on getting the James Street Swing Bridge reopened for vehicle traffic.

The bridge has been closed since October, 2013 due to a fire, causing nothing but headaches and a lengthy detour for motorists.

The call for action comes after Collins witnessed the swift action being taken by the government on the Nipigon River bridge.

He says there are several communities in the north that still don’t have road access to their communities.

The issue is back to the forefront following the brief closure of Highway 61 on Tuesday, the main alternate route to Fort William.

Collins says there was an emergency situation in the community during the closure which saw a member wait over an hour for an ambulance to arrive at their residence.

Fort William has been in a bitter and lengthy battle with CN and the government on who is responsible for repairing the James Street bridge.
