It was a groundbreaking day in Shoal Lake #40 Thursday.
A community celebration was held to mark the connection of the Freedom Road to Highway 1 in Manitoba.
The all-weather road isn’t yet ready for public use but Kenora MP Bob Nault says they witnessed the remarkable progress made during the construction phase of the project.
Nault says it demonstrated the skills of the community workforce; two-thirds of which are from the community.
He says the Freedom Road will provide year-round access to the mainland, which means improved availability to health care and social programming.
He says it also means increased economic opportunities and improved infrastructure.
Nault adds the project is long overdue, and is a testament to the conviction and dedication of Chief Redsky, community members, Freedom Road supporters, and countless others.
He stresses today is about much more than just a road; it’s about a community that came together to fight for long overdue justice in order to improve their everyday lives and lives of generations to come.
