Garnet James Gabrielson

Garnet James Gabrielson “Garnie” as he was fondly called, passed quietly from this life at his home in Wabigoon on January 24, 2010. He was lovingly cared for by his wife, Alice, daughter Wendy Kerney, granddaughter Angela Kirwan and close friends David and Linda Huckell.

Garnie always stated that he had a “Love Affair” with a truck all of his life starting at the age of 17, until his retirement from Skene’s Trucking at the age of 78 years. He was a “Truck Driver Emeritus”.

Fond memories of his early years were spent growing up on Blackwater Creek with brother Walter, trapping, hunting and fishing.

Garnie was a “story teller” and enjoyed many social hours at the “Twin Towers” restaurant exchanging stories on hunting, truck-driving and of early years commercial fishing with Herman Johnson and Dan Bullock, as well as, a short time on the tug boats on Wabigoon Lake pulling boom logs to the mill.

His sense of humour and words of wisdom garnered many friends both old and young.

Garnet is survived by his loving wife Alice, his daughter Wendy Kerney (Ken), his granddaughter Angela Kirwan (Dan), great-grandchildren Jaymi and Dalton Kirwan, his sister Dolores Dunn (Clayton), stepchildren Rodney Symonds (Tom Goodall), Sherri Fleming (Don) and Karen Morrell (Jerry), stepchildren Murray Abrams (Kelly) and Merrill Kluke (Terry), step grandchildren Liam and Ailish Abrams, and Madison and Sawyer Kluke.

Garnet was predeceased by his first wife Thelma Lyle, his son James Gabrielson, his parents Ernest and Irene Gabrielson, siblings; brother Walter Gabrielson, sisters Minnie Rushowick & husband Bill and Marion Bullock & husband Dan, as well as his second wife Mary Abrams.

Garnet will be sadly missed by his wife Alice, family and friends both young and old.

A Memorial Funeral Service to celebrate the life of Garnet Gabrielson will be held Saturday, January 30th at 11:00 a.m. in the Full Gospel Church with Velma Henderson officiating. Interment of ashes will take place in the Wabigoon Cemetery at a later date.
