February 21, 1933 – January 15, 2013
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gordon Barker, age 79, of Eagle River on Tuesday January 15, 2013.
Gord was born in Dryden, Ontario on February 21, 1933 to Louella and Russell Barker. He had many passions in life including antiques, big trucks, farming and hockey. He was employed at the Dryden mill for 32 years (the one with his hands in his pockets and the brim of his hat rolled up) and upon retirement started Barker’s Contracting. He loved driving gravel trucks and snow plows and was proud that he was the oldest driver on the crew! He loved all his animals from horses, to dogs to chickens. If you ever wanted to get rid of an animal you called Gord. His biggest achievement in the later years was the purchase of the Eagle River School where he could house all his treasures and antiques that he had collected over the years. His dream was to be able to share the history of the area with everyone and anyone that would listen. You could always borrow something from him but never buy it.
Gord is survived by his wife, Joyce, of 56 years, his children Russell (Linda) Barker, Charlene (Dale) Peeters, Candice (Brad) Elyk and Jaymes (Lesley) Barker, ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren, brother Donald Barker of Marathon, sister-in-law Anne Barker of Marathon, brother-in-law Rodney (Angela) Campbell and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, one brother (Edward) and one sister (Bernice).
Gord was successful, strong willed and even a little stubborn at times. He was passionate about what he enjoyed and it showed in his many projects over the years. He will be sadly missed and happily remembered for many years to come. “Sleep well Grumpy”
As per Gords wishes there will be no service. Cremation has taken place and interment of the ashes will be at a later date.
If friends desire donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society through the Stevens Funeral Homes P.O. Box 412, Dryden ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be posted at stevensfuneralhomes.ca
