Both levels of government are out with funding to support Nishnawbe Aski Nation youth. The money is earmarked for programs and services to ensure all First Nations students have access to safe and supportive learning when they leave their home community to attend school in more urban centres. The Feds have committed $4.67-million for the next three years, while the province is investing $5.5-million for the upcoming school year. Part of the plan is an urban-living curriculum to talk about health, safety and succeeding in school away from home. Other action being taken is increased accommodation choices, on-call staff who will work directly with students, and more culturally relevant learning in area schools. In July, NAN requested a state of emergency be declared in response to a crisis for the safety of Indigenous youth in Thunder Bay.
