The Ford government is proposing reforms to Ontario’s social assistance programs.
Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod says it’s necessary to replace a patchwork of programs and policies that aren’t effective.
She plans to take the next 100 days to come up with a better strategy.
MacLeod says the Liberal approach was done more to score political points than to actually help people in poverty.
She says the old way of doing things was costing the province too much money and not helping enough people.
MacLeod says the PC plan will help get people back to work and keep working.
In the meantime, a planned 3% increase to Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support payments will be limited to 1.5% and a basic income pilot program is being halted.
