Grassy Narrows Dispute Reaches Queen’s Park

The Grassy Narrows First Nation claims the Minister of Natural Resources is making false statements about plans for clear cut logging in the Whiskey Jack Forest.
This morning in the Ontario Legislature, David Orazietti stated there are no wood harvesting blocks in Grassy’s Traditional Land Use Territory.
However, Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell says Grassy Chief Simon Fobister believes MNR officers are interfering with their community members as they are going about with their traditional activities on their traditional land.
Campbell is asking the Minister to seriously consult with the First Nation.
Orazietti says his government is committed to working with the area First Nations in the Whiskey Jack Forest area and notes First Nations interests are being heard.
Grassy maintains that the government has plans to carry out clear cut logging activity within the next decade.
