Grassy Narrows First Nation says it’s disappointed with a Supreme Court ruling last week, but is willing to work with the province.
The nations highest court ruled last week that Ontario has the right to allow industrial forest activity on Grassy’s traditional lands.
Grassy Chief Roger Fobister says now that they’ve exhausted their legal avenues, it’s time to negotiate.
Fobister notes that the ruling does say the province has to respect the harvesting rights of aboriginals in the area, and that’s an important aspect of the ruling for his community.
He admits he doesn’t know how the ruling will affect a 10-year blockade of forest access roads in his community.
