The Green candidate for the Kenora riding is calling on the federal government to come forward with full funding for an all-weather road to Shoal Lake #40.
Ember McKillop says a recent Conservative announcement to get the project started is a drop in the bucket to what’s really needed.
McKillop says the First Nations community has waited for 100-years for action and notes the province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg have supported the project.
She stresses the community is plagued by unsafe drinking water, one of 85 across the country still under a boil water advisory.
McKillop is also concentrating on a recent report on mercury poisoning on Grassy Narrows First Nation showing contamination has actually increased.
She says babies are being born now with mercury contamination, calling the situation “unacceptable”.
McKillop says she’s disappointed with the inaction of both the Feds and province.
The complete interview with the political rookie will be featured Sunday morning on our News Magazine ‘Northwest Monitor’.
