Public School Board Focusing On Aboriginal And Special Education

The Director of Education for the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board believes the gap between aboriginal and non-aboriginal students is probably the single biggest challenge they will face in the next 10-years.

Sean Monteith says the board has identified that as one key area heading into next school year.

He adds special education opportunities is another priority.

Monteith says they have to be more proactive in helping students with special needs.

He notes one in four kids in northwestern Ontario have some sort of special need.

Monteith adds the Board is just starting to collect data on the Kids in Care and Foster Care-Crown Wards movement in order to improve graduation rates.
