Greg Rickford Discusses Funding For Freedom Road

The Conservative candidate in the Kenora Riding is firing back at a member of his own party over the Freedom Road to Shoal Lake #40.

On Monday, Joy Smith, the retiring MP for Kildonan-St. Paul, called on Stephen Harper to build the Freedom Road.

Greg Rickford says they’ve already committed funding to the design phase and improving the portion of the Freedom Road in the community.

Rickford says the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs has been working with the community to upgrade a portion of the road to all-weather status.

He says the design phase should be completed by the end of the year, but notes until that’s done they don’t know what the final costs will be.

Earlier this year, Rickford announced $1-million to help design the Freedom Road, funding that was matched by the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg.

Rickford stresses they support the construction of the road in principle and that’s why they’ve already provided funding towards the project.
