Hampton seeks rise in minimum wage

A private members bill to raise the minimum wage in Ontario has passed first and second reading at Queen’s
Park.

The bill was given unanimous approval in the Ontario Legislature, but now will have to go through committee
hearings.

NDP leader Howard Hampton says they will be launching a campaign soon to gain support for the 10 dollar minimum
wage.

The minimum currently sits at $7.75 an hour and is supposed to rise to eight dollars in the new year.

Hampton believes the government will try to kill the private members bill on the order paper instead of letting it go forward for third and final reading.
