Health Care Levy Request Made; Council Says Decision Can’t Be Taken Lightly

The Dryden Regional Health Services Foundation has asked for assistance to help make ends meet.

Fundraising Coordinator Chuck Schmitt has approached Council to ask for a health care levy, that would result in an additional $18 a year, for every household.

That would result in roughly $61,000 in extra revenue for the hospital.

Schmitt says all money generated would be used to cover the shortfall for capital purchases.

He notes their annual capital wish list is between $600,000-$800,000.

Schmitt points out $520,000 is covered by community donations and operating revenue.

He notes support from Dryden residents is already strong and he’s hoping Council gives his request serious consideration.

Ontario hospitals are facing increasing pressures to stay in the black and the Dryden facility is one of few who has managed to balance the books.

As for in-house requirements, Schmitt says they have a three year forecast of capital priorities.

For example, Schmitt says the CT Scan Unit has about six years left in its lifeline and the hospital will soon have to start looking at its options.

Dryden Council says it will have to take a serious look at the request.

Norm Bush, who sits on the Hospital Board, suggests it’s another form of taxation and is concerned it’s another example of provincial downloading.

He stresses this kind of request can’t be taken likely.

Roger Valley says they need more input from staff on the issue, but notes the request comes late in the budget cycle.

He suggests it could be something they look at for 2017.

Mary Trist says the hospital is a hub for the area and the levy should be seriously looked at.

Chuck Schmitt says he will be making the same pitch to Councillors in Machin and Ignace and also plans to meet with leadership in Wabigoon Lake First Nation and Eagle Lake First Nation.
