Health Unit Asking You To Be Mindful Of Ticks

There are multiple reports of high tick numbers in the bush across northwestern Ontario.

The Northwestern Health Unit says the Kenora and Rainy River districts are considered high risk for blacklegged and wood ticks.

Manager of Environmental Health Thomas Nabb is urging local residents to immediately contact them if they find an attached tick.

If you find a tick on yourself or someone else, you can drop it off at your local health unit office for inspection.

Nabb says you can also submit photos of ticks electronically through their new iOS app.

A health inspector will review the photo and reply with further instructions on what to do with the tick.

If you stumble upon a tick, you can grasp it by the head with clean tweezers, pulling it out straight and cleaning the area with an alcohol swab or soap and water.

Nabb says if a tick has been attached for longer than 24-hours, you should visit your health care provider within 72-hours of removing it.

Symptoms of Lyme disease may occur 3 to 30 days after being bitten.
