Health Unit Calling For Changes To Bill-45

The Northwestern Health Unit is urging the provincial government to amend Bill-45, the Making Healthier Choices Act.

Officials want the Liberals to include sodium labelling and to allow for municipal bylaws to address additional nutrition information beyond sodium and calories.

They say more and more Canadians are eating out and taking in excessive intakes of calories, sodium and fat and they should be made aware of what they are consuming.

The Health Unit says menu labelling provides an opportunity to keep children healthier.

They stress the average sodium intake of all ages of Canadian children exceeds the tolerable upper limit established by the Institute of Medicine.

A resolution from the Board of Directors has been sent to the Premier, the Chief Medical Officer of Health and Ontario Boards of Health among others.
