The Northwestern Health Unit is encouraging all septic tank system users to conduct regular maintenance.
Chief Building Official Doug Vergunst says doing so will save you thousands of dollars in the long run, and help the environment.
Vergunst adds that most septic systems need to be pumped every 1 to 5-years, and recommends installing an effluent filter. They keep many suspended solids back in the septic tank, which can increase the life of the system.
In addition, Vergunst says it’s important to maintain the field portion of the septic system. Folks are advised to avoid changing drainage patterns near the septic system.
