An Overdose Prevention Program is being offered by the Northwestern Health Unit.
Gillian Lunny is the Manager of Sexual Health and Harm Reduction Programs, and says the program is for those at risk of overdosing on opioids.
Opioids are derived from opium, and legal forms of them include hydromorphone, oxycodone and fentanyl. An illegal form of it is heroin.
Lunny says the program aims to educate those using drugs about overdose and how to prevent them from happening with the help of a new drug called Naloxone.
When injected, Naloxone can reverse the effects of an overdose within minutes.
Lunny says anyone who uses or knows someone who uses opioids and is at risk for overdose, should contact their local health unit.
